Horror as ferry smashes into rocks after captain loses control

A ferry has smashed into rocks after the captain lost control, with shocking footage showing the aftermath. The startling incident happened when the Isola di Capraia was manoeuvring into the small port on the island of San Nicola, which is part of Italy’s Isole Tremiti. In the video, the front of the ferry is wedged on the rocks as smaller boats move in closer. Another clip, taken behind the vessel, shows how it has been lifted out of the water form the incident. Seven passengers were on board the boat at the time but were unharmed along with the crew. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to check how much the boat had been damaged.

Local media report technical issues with the ferry meant the captain could not control the ship and it crashed into the rocks. The ferry, owned by a company called Tirrenia, was reportedly tugged to the port for an investigation into the exact causes of the crash and to assess the damage done. Marco Napolitano, owner of the local Hotel Gabbiano, said he hoped it was not serious, with the ferry expected to bring the first tourists to the island next week as Italy begins to move out of the coronavirus lockdown. The vessel can transport 522 passengers along with 57 vehicles and connects the Tremiti Islands with the Italian peninsula the whole year round.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. It is not the only cruise ship accident to have been caught on camera in recent years. Footage emerged in 2018 of an out-of-control ferry smashing into Barcelona’s port causing a huge fire. The vessel crashed into a crane in the horror video, which quickly fell to the ground to create a blaze. And last year, a packed ferry ran aground in Benidorm resulting in 400 tourists being evacuated.
