It is believed another 65 are injured after the vehicle blew up this morning in the eastern town of Morogoro, around 120 miles west of the capital Dar es Salaam. Regional police commissioner Steven Kabwe told local Azam TV that 57 bodies have been recovered after the blast and many others are being treated for burns.

According to state broadcaster TBC Taifa, some victims were reportedly siphoning petrol from the vehicle which had crashed. Officials fear the death toll will rise further. ‘We have been saddened by reports of an accident involving a fuel truck in Morogoro, which caught fire and burned several people,’ government spokesman Hassan Abbasi said on Twitter.
